Key takeaways

  • Fotor is a free-to-start photo editor and design workspace from Everimaging that has bolted a generative layer on top: text-to-image, inpainting, canvas expansion and an AI agent called Sisi, running on third-party models such as Nano Banana, FLUX, Seedream, Wan and Qwen. It's good at quick jobs, and mobile users rate the core editing highly (4.7 out of 5 on the US App Store, 4.1 on Google Play as of August 2026).
  • The audience is moving. Fotor started in 2012 as a browser "Photoshop Lite", added templates and graphic design, then AI generation, and in May 2026 announced an AI Vibe Marketing Platform aimed at ecommerce sellers and performance marketers. Casual editors are still served, but the newest features (Virtual Model, Smart Listing, Product Video, batch editing) are built for people selling things.
  • The free account is real but narrow: basic tools, limited templates and a small daily credit allowance, with free design material licensed for personal use only. Paid tiers are Pro (100 credits a month), Pro+ (300 credits, plus AI Slides, batch editing, brand kits and 100GB storage) and Max (1,000 credits). The dollar figures are localized and were not published in a form we could pin down, so check the live pricing page in your currency.
  • Third-party traffic estimates put fotor.com at roughly 8 million visits in June 2026, down from about 14.6 million in November 2025. Fotor itself claims 800 million global users; that is a company figure with no published methodology.
  • The biggest caveat is billing. Fotor's terms make paid fees non-refundable, cancellation must land before the renewal date, and complaints about unexpected renewals and refused refunds are the dominant negative theme on Trustpilot and in the review synthesis we read. Read the cancellation article before you subscribe.

What is Fotor?

Fotor is the consumer brand of Everimaging, a company with Chengdu and Hong Kong addresses founded by Tony (Jiang) Duan. It began in 2012 as a Flash-based online photo editor, moved to HTML5 by 2017, and has since grown into three things under one login: a photo editor with one-click enhancement, background and object removal; a template-driven graphic design workspace for social posts, ads and slides; and an AI creation layer for generating and editing images and video from a prompt. The homepage still calls itself "Photo Editor: Free Online Photo Editing & Image Editor", while company material describes an "All-in-One Photo Editing & AI Creation Platform". Both are accurate. It runs in the browser and as iOS, Android, Mac and Windows apps.

What makes Fotor distinct is the mix rather than any single tool. The AI editor advertises more than 30 tools and names Nano Banana, Wan, Seedream, FLUX and Qwen as the engines behind them; the privacy policy lists a longer roster that also includes Veo, Kling, Seedance, Hailuo, Midjourney and Pixverse. None of these are Fotor's own models. Fotor's own work is the editor, the templates, and the workflow that lets you upload a product photo, cut the background, expand the canvas, drop the result into a listing template and export, without leaving the tab. Since August 2025 an AI agent called Sisi sits on top of that, taking conversational instructions and keeping the edit history so you can iterate without re-uploading.

Around the core sit the newer business features. ReShot, an enhancement tool, launched in March 2026. The AI Vibe Marketing Platform, announced in May 2026, packages Product Image Editor, Smart Listing, Virtual Model, Video Try-On, Product Video and batch editing for ecommerce teams. A line in the scrape says Fotor does it "all for free", and that is too broad: the basic editor is free, but premium tools, commercial design resources, HD output and most AI generation are gated by a subscription or credits.

How it works

  1. Open it and start editing

Go to fotor.com in a browser or install the mobile or desktop app. Basic editing works without paying, and some AI generators let you try a prompt without signing up. Saving work, cloud sync across devices and any meaningful generation allowance need an account.

  2. Pick a tool or a workflow

Upload a JPEG, PNG or WEBP up to 40MB and 8192 by 8192 pixels on the AI editor, then choose the job: AI Photo Enhancer, Remove Background, Object Remover, AI Expand, Text-to-Image, or one of the product-visual workflows. Templates for social posts, ads and slides start from the design side of the same workspace.

  3. Prompt, select or adjust

For generation you type a natural-language prompt and choose a model or style. For edits you brush over the area to change, remove or replace, and Fotor returns an editable result rather than a flat image. Sisi, the AI agent, takes follow-up instructions in plain language and remembers what you've already done to the image.

  4. Refine and export

Finish with the regular editor tools, apply a brand kit, or run the same change across a batch of catalog images on Pro+. Download as JPG, PNG or PDF. HD output, transparent PNG, premium resources and commercial rights on design material depend on your plan; AI-generated images carry their own commercial-use terms.

Features

AI Photo Enhancer

One click improves lighting, detail and clarity, and the same tool covers unblurring and old-photo restoration. This is the feature Fotor's mobile audience rates most consistently, and it's the entry point for most first-time users.

AI Background Remover

Isolates the subject automatically and exports a transparent-background image, which Fotor advertises as a job of seconds. It's the workhorse behind the ecommerce positioning: cut the product out once, then reuse it across listings, ads and templates.

AI Object Remover, AI Expand and inpainting

Brush over photobombers, text, stamps or clutter and Fotor fills the gap while trying to keep the surrounding image intact. AI Expand extends the canvas beyond the original frame, and inpainting adds, replaces or removes a selected object without regenerating the whole picture.

AI Image Generator

Text-to-image and image-to-image generation, with free-to-try entry points and a daily credit allowance in some workflows. The engines are third-party: the AI editor names Nano Banana, Wan, Seedream, FLUX and Qwen, and the image-tools pages also reference GPT Image. Availability varies by tool, region and plan, and each model has its own look, so results shift when you switch.

AI Agent Sisi

Launched in August 2025, Sisi is a conversational layer for image and video creation. It retains context and edit history, so you can say what to change next instead of re-uploading and re-prompting. Pro+ lists an allowance of 4,000 agent chats and 5 agent tasks in the current pricing presentation.

Product Visuals for ecommerce

Product Image Editor, Smart Listing, Virtual Model, Video Try-On and Product Video turn a single product photo into marketplace listings, model shots without a studio, and short promotional clips or URL-to-video ads. These are the core of the AI Vibe Marketing Platform Fotor announced in May 2026.

AI Slides, Brand Kits and Batch Editing

Pro+ adds presentation creation, brand kits for consistent colours and logos across assets, batch processing for catalogs, and 100GB of cloud storage. Work syncs between the web app and the desktop and mobile apps.

What people use it for

  • Cutting backgrounds from product photography for ecommerce listings
  • Generating social posts, ads, illustrations and campaign concepts from a prompt or a template
  • Restoring, sharpening and unblurring old or damaged photographs
  • Producing virtual-model and try-on imagery without a studio shoot
  • Building marketplace listings from a single product image with Smart Listing
  • Making short promotional product videos and URL-to-video ads
  • Turning a brand kit into repeatable slides and catalog assets on Pro+

Fotor is not a confirmed replacement for a layered professional editor, a colour-managed photo workflow or a legally cleared image-production pipeline; AI outputs and third-party model rights still need human review before they ship.

Fotor sells a permanent free account, three subscriptions (Pro, Pro+ and Max, each monthly or yearly) and separately purchased credits, all listed on the pricing page as of August 2026. The tier names and inclusions are published; the localized dollar prices are not reproduced here because they render per market, so open the pricing page in your own currency before budgeting. Credits are the unit for AI image and video generation and don't on their own unlock the Pro editor, premium templates or HD downloads: Pro includes 100 credits a month with up to 10 concurrent generations, Pro+ 300 credits with up to 30 concurrent generations, and Max 1,000 credits. Subscription credits roll over while you stay subscribed, capped at five months of accumulation, and expire when the subscription ends; one-time purchased credits last two years; activity credits usually last one day. Free design material is personal-use only, Pro covers free and Pro-marked material for commercial use, and Pro+ covers everything listed. AI Avatar packages are one-time purchases, discounted for subscribers. Refunds are the part to read twice. Fotor's terms say service is delivered instantly and subscription fees are not refundable; cancelling stops the next renewal but is not a refund, and access runs to the end of the paid period. The July 2026 cancellation article warns that cancelling late allows the renewal to go through and that failed payment retries may continue, and Fotor's own guidance on how far ahead to cancel has ranged from seven days in an older Help Center version to 24 hours in the 2025 terms. We found no team, enterprise, pooled-credit or API pricing as of August 2026, and no verified price change or tier rename in the previous 12 months.

Traffic & reach

These are third-party estimates for fotor.com captured in August 2026 and covering June 2026, and Fotor has not confirmed them; treat them as a proxy for web adoption rather than an official number. The direction is what stands out: the estimate has fallen from about 14.6 million visits in November 2025 to just under 8 million in June 2026, with one small uptick in March 2026. Most of that traffic arrives through organic search, with direct visits the second source, which fits a tool people find by searching for a background remover rather than one they open daily. Web visits also understate Fotor's reach, since Google Play alone reports more than 10 million installs of the Android app. Fotor's own claim of 800 million global users comes from a company press release with no published methodology.

What to know before you commit

  • What people rate it for. Ease of use and breadth. A July 2026 TechReviewer assessment calls Fotor accessible to casual and semi-professional users and scores usability and functionality as strengths because so many tools sit in one place. The mobile apps carry the strongest independent signal: 4.7 out of 5 from 42,000 US App Store ratings and 4.1 from roughly 706,000 Google Play reviews as of August 2026. One long App Store review from August 2024 called the core editing "incredible" and said there was almost nothing it couldn't do, then gave one star for everything around it.

  • Billing complaints are a pattern, not noise. Trustpilot's summary as of August 2025 says most reviewers were let down, and the specific stories repeat: unexpected renewals, charges after cancellation, a free trial cancelled with two days to spare that was billed anyway, and refused refunds. These are user reports rather than adjudicated findings, but they line up with Fotor's written terms, which make paid fees non-refundable and require cancellation before the renewal date. We found no lawsuit or regulator action; the dispute is about disclosure and support experience.

  • Support gets criticized alongside billing. The 2026 review synthesis describes support answers in billing disputes as robotic, dismissive or absent, and rates cost-effectiveness and support as Fotor's weak points. If you expect to need a refund or an account fix, plan for a slow response.

  • Generation quality and limits are mixed. The same synthesis calls AI generation accuracy inconsistent and the credit accounting opaque. Google Play reviewers in August 2026 reported video jobs that never completed and paid features that became unavailable; an App Store reviewer reported being logged out every few days and heavy ad and upgrade prompts on the free tier; another Google Play reviewer said mildly suggestive images were refused under newer moderation rules. Model availability and moderation change quickly across web and mobile.

  • A 2020 data exposure was reported and never publicly closed. In December 2020 Security Discovery reported an unauthenticated database of more than 123 million records, including about 13 million user records with names, emails and IDs. We found no verified Fotor response, notification or independent breach determination. A separate LeakRadar figure of 263,820 compromised credentials tied to fotor.com is a lead, not a confirmed incident. Fotor has not published a security page or incident history as of August 2026.

  • The growth numbers are the company's own. Fotor said 250 million users in 2017 and 800 million in May 2026, through press releases with no methodology. Headcount snapshots range from 16 to about 32 on LinkedIn-based profiles against 100 on Wikipedia, and the roughly $7.6 million annual revenue figure that circulates is a third-party estimate, not a disclosure. None of it is audited.

Leadership
Tony (Jiang) Duan is founder and CEO of Everimaging, the company behind Fotor. He is described as holding a PhD from the University of Nottingham and as a specialist in image processing and colour science, and Fotor's media kit calls him an honorary professor of computer science. No other executive biography has been independently verified.
Funding
Two rounds are reported: a $3.0 million Series A in April 2012 led by Lenovo Capital and Incubator Group (some databases credit Legend Capital or related Lenovo investors), and a $7.6 million Series B in September 2017 led by GF Securities and GF Xinde, which funded the HTML5 rebuild and international expansion. That adds to roughly $10.6 million, though Tracxn and GetLatka show only the $7.6 million, so the total is unreconciled. No valuation, acquisition or exit has been confirmed, and LinkedIn and aggregator profiles list the company as privately held.
Scale
Headcount is disputed: LinkedIn-based snapshots in 2026 show 16 to about 32 employees, Wikipedia says 100. Fotor claims 800 million global users in a May 2026 release, up from a 250 million claim in 2017; both are self-reported. The $7.6 million annual revenue figure that circulates comes from a third-party estimate, and Fotor itself has not disclosed revenue.
