Key takeaways
- Claude is Anthropic's general-purpose AI assistant, delivered as a chat product on web, iOS, Android and desktop plus a developer API. Reception is strong: G2's February 2026 review scored it 4.4/5 and the US iOS App Store showed 4.7/5 from 208,000 ratings in July 2026.
- The product has outgrown its chatbot origins. Claude launched in March 2023 and Claude 2 followed that July with 100K-token prompts; the current service adds Projects, Research, Artifacts, Claude Code, Cowork, a 200K context window and Slack, Google Workspace and remote MCP connectors, and it now serves enterprises alongside individuals.
- Pricing runs from a permanent free tier through Pro at $20 a month, Max 5x at $100, Max 20x at $200 and Team from $25 per standard seat monthly, with a custom Enterprise plan whose usage is billed separately at API rates. None of the plans promises a fixed message count: limits reset on a rolling five-hour window and vary by model, feature and conversation length.
- Traffic is enormous. Similarweb reporting cited by Forbes put claude.ai at more than 952 million visits in May 2026, up 855.6% year over year, roughly 9% of AI-chatbot web visits. All of these are third-party estimates; Anthropic publishes no official user figure.
- The biggest caveat is predictability and trust around the edges: users complain about hitting usage limits unexpectedly, a June 2026 outage came with unconfirmed data-mixing claims, publicly shared chat links surfaced in Google results in July 2026, and The Next Web reported approval of a $1.5 billion copyright settlement over training data the same month.
What is Claude?
Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant and the consumer face of its proprietary model family. You type a request in plain language and it writes, edits, summarizes, codes, analyzes data and answers research questions. It runs as a chat service on the web, as iOS, Android and desktop apps, and as an API for developers, with usage pooled across all of those surfaces. The listing name "Claude 2" refers to the July 11, 2023 model release that opened the claude.ai public beta with 100K-token prompts. The product has long since moved past that version; the current pricing pages reference newer model families including Opus, Sonnet and Haiku behind a 200K context window.
What sits around the chat box is now most of the product. Pro includes unlimited Projects for organizing chats and documents, Research, Artifacts for building interactive documents and mini-apps, file creation and code execution, Claude Code for developer work and Claude Cowork. The homepage advertises Slack and Google Workspace connections and remote MCP connectors for wiring in external context and tools, and Pro also lists Claude for Microsoft 365. Team and Enterprise add organizational controls, with Enterprise carrying audit logs, custom retention, compliance and analytics APIs and spend controls.
Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers led by Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei as an AI safety and research company, and that framing still shapes the product. The original launch pitched Claude as easier to converse with, more steerable and less likely to produce harmful outputs than earlier systems. Reviewers keep coming back for the conversational quality, the long-context document work and the coding usefulness, while the main competition comes from ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot.
How it works
Sign up and pick a surface
Open Claude on the web or install the iOS, Android or desktop app. The free tier lets supported users start without payment; paid features require a subscription, and your usage is pooled across web, desktop, mobile and Claude Code rather than counted per device.
Ask in plain language
Type a request in the chat interface, attach context where supported, and pick from the available models or features. Follow-up questions, revisions and corrections happen in the same conversation.
Work beyond the chat box
Organize related chats and documents into Projects, run Research for deeper answers, build interactive documents and mini-apps with Artifacts, or move into Claude Code or Cowork where your plan includes them. Developers call the same models through Anthropic's API, which is priced separately by token usage.
Watch your limits
Usage isn't a fixed message count. Limits reset on a rolling five-hour window, paid plans add weekly limits, and how fast you burn through depends on message length, model and features. You can check consumption in Settings > Usage, and paid users who hit their cap can wait, upgrade, or enable usage credits billed at standard API rates.
Features
Natural-language chat
The core surface is conversational: Q&A, writing, summarization, search-oriented work and coding in one thread. Anthropic's original product announcement emphasized steerability and helpful, harmless responses, and that restrained tone is a recurring reason people pick it.
Long context
Long documents were Claude's calling card from the start: Claude 2 accepted prompts up to 100K tokens, and the current pricing comparison lists a 200K context window. That's what makes summarizing contracts, reports and research material practical in a single pass.
Projects and Research
Pro includes unlimited Projects for keeping related chats and documents together. Research, which the current pricing page lists as included in Pro, gives longer, source-driven answers than a single chat turn.
Artifacts, files and code execution
The current service supports interactive Artifacts, file creation and code execution per the homepage, so a session can produce a working document or mini-app rather than just a wall of text. Exact limits on these features were not published on the retrieved pages.
Claude Code and Cowork
Pro, Team and Enterprise plans reference Claude Code, the developer-oriented coding surface, and the current Pro listing includes Claude Cowork. These extend the assistant from chat into hands-on software and collaborative work.
Connectors and remote MCP
The homepage advertises Slack and Google Workspace connections plus remote MCP connectors, so you can bring workplace context and external tools into a conversation instead of pasting everything in by hand.
Enterprise administration
The Enterprise plan adds audit logs, custom data retention, a compliance API, an analytics API and organization and user spend controls. Its seat fee is billed annually, and all usage is billed separately at standard API rates with no included token allowance.
What people use it for
- Drafting, editing and transforming business writing.
- Summarizing long documents and research material.
- Coding, debugging and software-agent workflows.
- Data visualization and analysis.
- Research and web-assisted question answering.
- Building interactive documents or mini-apps with Artifacts.
- Pulling workplace context from Slack, Google Workspace or MCP tools into a conversation.
Claude isn't a dependable substitute for a domain-specialist system or a real-time factual authority. G2's marketplace guidance specifically warns about niche expertise and real-time-data limitations.

As of August 2026 the free tier is permanent, not a trial. But every plan meters usage rather than promising message counts: limits reset on a rolling five-hour window, paid plans add weekly limits, consumption varies with message length, model and features, and usage is pooled across web, desktop, mobile and Claude Code. Pro is $20 monthly or $200 billed annually, which the pricing page also describes as $17 a month; Max 5x is $100 and Max 20x is $200 monthly. Team standard seats are $25 per member monthly, or $20 per seat when billed annually, with premium seats carrying five times standard usage; the Enterprise seat fee is billed annually and includes no token allowance, with all usage charged separately at standard API rates. Paid users who exhaust included usage can enable usage credits, also billed at API rates, and the pricing page doesn't state a fixed cost per generation or any rollover or expiry schedule for them. Payments are generally non-refundable except where terms or law require otherwise: EEA and UK customers may have a prorated 14-day refund route, and Apple-billed refunds go through Apple. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing period and Anthropic advises cancelling at least 24 hours before renewal. A verified academic and non-profit Team discount exists, with standard seats at $0 and premium seats at $15 per user monthly for 12 months; its pricing changed automatically after August 27, 2026, and for-profit companies are excluded. The pricing page is dynamic and explicitly says plans may change. Check it before you commit.
Traffic & reach
The numbers below are third-party estimates, a proxy for adoption rather than an official figure, and Anthropic publishes no official monthly-user count. They point the same direction: Similarweb reporting cited by Forbes counted more than 952 million visits to claude.ai in May 2026, up 855.6% from 99.7 million a year earlier, with five consecutive months of growth, and a July 2026 analysis put Claude at 9.2% of global generative-AI website traffic in June against 1.6% a year before. The scrape's June 2026 figure of roughly 946.8 million visits sits in the same range but wasn't independently confirmed, so treat exact totals as directional. Around 73% of visits arrive direct, the pattern of a bookmarked daily-use tool rather than one found through search.

What people rate it for. G2's February 2026 review scored Claude 4.4/5, with 93% satisfaction for natural conversation, 92% for ease of use, 89% for setup and 89% for creativity, across a customer mix of 67% small business, 26% mid-market and 7% enterprise. The US iOS App Store showed 4.7/5 from 208,000 ratings in July 2026. These are G2-reported and store-reported figures, not audited surveys, and they measure different populations.
Limits are the recurring complaint. Users and marketplace guidance flag high pricing, unpredictable limits and running out of usage unexpectedly, especially for budget-sensitive users and heavy workloads. Because limits are variable, pooled across surfaces and reset on rolling windows rather than fixed counts, heavy users can hit a wall mid-task or face usage-credit charges at API rates.
A June 2026 outage came with an unconfirmed data-mixing claim. Cybernews reported roughly two hours of elevated errors on June 5, 2026, along with social-media claims that responses may have been returned to the wrong users. Anthropic said the incident was an infrastructure outage, said it had no other evidence of customer-data leakage, and investigated the claims.
Shared chat links turned up in Google results. In July 2026 TechCrunch reported that publicly shared Claude conversations and Artifacts were appearing in Google search results, some allegedly containing sensitive personal and company information. Anthropic said links were only searchable when users had made them public and posted them where search engines could find them, and later testing found the results absent. The risk is about user understanding of the share feature, not a confirmed breach of private chats.
A $1.5 billion copyright settlement. The Next Web reported court approval in July 2026 of a $1.5 billion settlement over books obtained from shadow libraries, following a June 2025 ruling that distinguished training on lawfully purchased books from unauthorized acquisition. For a vendor courting enterprise trust, that's a major legal and training-data marker.
The growth numbers are the company's own. Anthropic's May 2026 Series H announcement says run-rate revenue crossed $47 billion earlier that month; that figure is self-reported, not audited. Traffic and user counts are third-party estimates built on differing methodologies. Treat all of them as directional, not as operating metrics.
