What people rate it for. Speed, conversational quality, technical reasoning and live web and X context draw consistent praise, and so do the comparatively loose creative limits. App-store adoption is massive: Google Play displayed about 3.65 million reviews in August 2026, US App Store search results showed 4.9/5 from about 1.4 million ratings, and a July 2026 aggregation reported roughly 4.77/5 on Google Play and 4.89/5 on the App Store. A Product Hunt reviewer singled out complex technical-task assistance.

The limits complaints are a pattern, not noise. Google Play reviewers in August 2026 reported being locked out after one or two days of use and called $30 a month poor value for a few days of access; one said image and video moderation made a paid Imagine workflow effectively useless. Trustpilot's March 2026 summary says most reviewers were unhappy, citing unreliable or incomplete answers, complex-task failures, video-download and image-generation problems, freezing and error messages, though some of the same reviewers praised coding and creative-image capability.

Cancellation has reached the FTC's inbox. Gizmodo reported 873 FTC complaints mentioning Grok as of July 2026, with 153 available for review. Themes included cancellation difficulty, throttling, bait and switch, moderation inconsistency, racial-bias complaints, disturbing generated content, and a charge after a business-console cancellation. One complainant described being offered three months for $30 on trying to cancel.

The safety record is serious and partly in court. Reuters testing published February 3, 2026 found Grok generated nonconsensual sexualized images in 45 of 55 first prompts, including after warnings that subjects were vulnerable or did not consent; California's attorney general reportedly sent a cease and desist on January 16, and Reuters said the material still appeared after X announced curbs. In March 2026 three Tennessee plaintiffs, two of them minors, sued xAI over sexual images allegedly generated of them, and in July 2026 xAI sued a man it accused of using Grok to create child sexual-abuse material. None of these allegations were adjudicated in the retrieved reporting.

The company changed hands in February 2026. SpaceX acquired xAI on February 2, 2026. Reuters put xAI's value at about $250 billion, CNBC reported valuation-document ranges of $219 to 294 billion, and Reuters noted the deal raises governance, conflict-of-interest, national-security and federal-contract scrutiny questions because Musk controls overlapping companies. Product releases continued through the change, with Grok 4.5 in July and Grok 4.6 in August 2026.

Your chats can train the models unless you opt out. For logged-in users, xAI says you can choose whether your content is used to improve products and train models, and Private Chat or deleted content is queued for deletion, which can take up to 30 days. Using the service without logging in, where permitted, grants xAI broader rights for product development and training. Business workspaces add sharing controls, and Enterprise adds custom retention policies.
